Introduction

I am a beginner in the life of the world of woodworking but felt it deserved a spot in my blogging world for others to share.

The man I have learned the most from is my Uncle Carl which is 3,000+ miles away from me in California. Unfortunatly, Michigan is not too big on the craft of woodworking so I am experimenting on my own for the most part.

Any trip that brings me to California I make my visit to family which includes Carl and I try and pick up something that I can bring home and practice.

My recent trip was for Christmas and he provided some books that I believe will help me get going on a project.

Woodcraft Supply

Woodcraft Supply Corp -- Helping you make wood work.

Went here today to pick up a couple of things. Found some nice pieces of wood (approx.5-6" in width and 8' long) for around $20.00 of nice wood like Cherry and Maple.

Of course there is a down side of this... the edges are rough cut so there are only two things I can do to fix this.
1.) The preferred way is to buy a joiner (approx. $250-$800) and run the edge of the board down the joiner. Awsome square cuts which are great for "furniture making" <-- what I want to do.

2.) The cheaper way to handle this rough cut lumber is to run it down a very squared table saw. Little bit by little bit so not to cut too much of the good stuff off. The cut will be as good as the table saw is square, but it will never be as good as a joiner.

Biscuit Joiner of Choice

Okay, so I want to get into woodworking cause I love the look of wood furniture also I am hoping to make some cash doing a hobby I love.
So one of the tools I need to purchase is a Biscuit Joiner (this puts joins two pieces of wood together via a biscuit)

The best Joiner I found is a porter-cable (model557) and its cheapest at Home Depot ($197)
The middle of the road to low end of the totem pole is either the Dewalt ($169) or the Ryobi ($100). Tough call, but maybe I try out the woodworking with a $100 Ryobi and if I like it then move up to the Top of the line Porter-Cable.

I also found today a Dovetail Kit (requires you own a router of course.. which I don't yet) at sears for around 159.00 for two templates and the router bit.

So you need the biscuit joiner to fasten corners OR a dovetail kit plus router and finally a table saw.
